Number Of U.S Vegetarians
A 2009 survey by the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) found that 3% of U.S. adults say the never eat meat, poultry, and fish/seafood (classified as vegetarian). Approximately one-third to one-quarter of this group (1% of all U.S. adults) also say they never eat dairy, eggs, and honey (classified as vegan).
According to 2008 survey results, 50% of U.S. adults said they ordered a meat-, poultry-, and seafood-free dish sometimes, often, or always. However, for the 2009 survey, VRG asked respondents what foods they “never” eat from a list including meat, poultry, fish/seafood, dairy products, eggs, honey, or if they “sometimes eat all these foods,” or “don’t know.”
