Law On Keeping Dangerous Pets To Be Eased
Proposed legislation in Britain would ease licensing standards for owners of exotic pets and result in fewer site inspections. A survey of 87 local authorities found 267 dangerous snakes, 36 camels, 36 scorpions, 30 crocodilians (including caimans and alligators), 23 big cats, and one zebra among the exotic pets kept in British homes.
According to the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, the objective of this proposed legislation is to reduce the burden on exotic animal keepers. Licensing and inspection requirements are currently outlined in the Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is seeking to block the proposed legislation.
