Death Of Australian Dream: Companion Animals Pay The Price
A report by the Australian Companion Animal Council (ACAC) notes that the number of people with feline and canine companions has decreased in Australia over the past decade. They attribute this in part to the reduction of open spaces.
In the past decade the number of people in Australia living with companions has decreased 14% for dogs and 10% for cats. This is attributed largely to a shift in living with less space. One indication of this is the most popular dog breed; previously the German Shepard was the favorite whereas now the smaller Maltese is the favorite breed. This decline in companion animal ownership has weakened the Australian companion animal-care industry significantly.
