There are approximately 7,000 cows still trapped after Hurricane Ike and without access to fresh food or water they will have difficulty surviving in the wild.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, only 15,000 cows have been accounted for, out of an estimated 40,000 cows in two Texas counties, Jefferson and Chambers. Approximately 7,000 cows are trapped in water or on levies in Louisiana.
Concerns are growing for lost roaming cattle in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, as roaming cows have no access to fresh water or food and will have difficulty surviving in these conditions. In-state relief efforts are already underway by several Cattlemen’s associations.
