You Must Not Be Rude About A Panda
A fashion show based on emulating the black and white look of pandas drew harsh criticism by some and was cited as justification for a draft law that would ban images considered demeaning to this national symbol, supported by 47% of respondents to a national survey.
An estimated 1,590 giant panda bears are believed to survive in the wild, largely in the southwestern mountainous areas of China. By the end of 2006, 239 pandas lived in captivity in China.
A new potential law under consideration would ban uncomplimentary images of the panda bear, a national symbol of China. A survey of public opinion shows that 47% are in favor of the law, while 45% are opposed. However, about half agreed that artists should have free license to portray the panda.
