The Co-operative is now planning to improve their brand of "Truly Irresistible" animal products to be reared under the higher welfare standards devised by the RSPCA.

As of January 2009, in response to a poll of 100,000 U.K. customers, The Co-operative’s brand of “Truly Irresistible” pork, bacon, and sausages will be made using animals reared on farms approved under the Freedom Food scheme, which assesses conditions for farm animals in accordance to standards devised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Co-operative is the United Kingdom’s largest convenience store retailer; it is planning to roll out its “higher-welfare” standards to all its brand fresh pork by Autumn 2009. These actions are in response to a survey of 100,000 U.K. customers, in which animal welfare emerged as one of the top areas customers wished to see prioritized by the company.

The Future of Pork Production in the World: Towards Sustainable, Welfare-Positive Systems

This study speculates on forthcoming global trends in pig farming, beginning from the position that as human population grows, so too will "pork" production.
