The Faunalytics Animal Tracker is an annual survey of U.S. adults' opinions and behavior relating to animals. The survey asks five questions each year, rotating the questions so that new results are available for each question every three years. This graphing tool, designed by Animal Visuals, is a powerful way to explore the Animal Tracker data in detail and to visualize animal-related trends.
The various sections of the application are explained in the sections below.
Explore By Topic
In this section, questions are organized by topic:
- Awareness and Knowledge
- In the past three months, how often have you talked about or heard someone talking about animal protection, including animal rights and/or animal welfare?
- How knowledgeable do you feel about issues that affect the welfare of animals in the following circumstances?
- Perceptions of Animal Advocacy
- What is your opinion of each of the following social causes or political movements?
- How much credibility do you give to each of the following sources when it comes to information about animal welfare?
- In general, how much do you support or oppose each of the following tactics?
- Regardless of your personal opinion about the animal protection movement, how much of an impact do you think it has had on our nation's policies?

Compare Responses
This tool allows you to compare the responses for any single question against each other. Some questions are formatted to have a single query answered for several sub-categories (For example, "What is your opinion of each of the following social causes or political movements?", lists a number of social causes, and the respondent can rate each of them as "Favorable", "Unfavorable", "No Opinion" or "Don't Know"). For this type of question, this tool allows you to compare the responses for each category to each other category. Some questions only have one sub-category, such as "In the past three months, how often have you talked about or heard someone talking about animal protection, including animal rights and/or animal welfare?".
This tool allows you to select a single demographic group to compare data for. By default, it shows data for all respondents. If you update the demographic type dropdown, the demographic segment buttons will update to show the segments for that demographic type. Select a demographic segment other than 'All' to view data for that demographic segment. While any demographic type is selected, you can select the 'All' segment to view data for all respondents.
Timeline
This tool allows you to select a topic with the first row of tabs and view timeline charts for all questions listed under that topic. Note that not all questions were included in all surveys, so timelines may skip some years. You can also select a demographic type and demographic group to see how responses changed over time for just that demographic group. By default, all respondents are shown.
Explore By Year
Single Question
This tool allows you to view questions for a single wave at a time. You can select a wave using the top row of tabs. When you change the wave, the list of questions that were included in that wave will update in the 'Select a question' dropdown. And the chart will update to reflect the first question in that wave. You can also select a demographic type and a single demographic segment using the 'Select demographics' form section.
All Questions
This section is the same as the 'Single Question' section, except instead of displaying one question at a time, it displays all questions for a given wave. You may wish to use this to browse through all questions quickly on one page, but it can be slower to load if you are changing demographics often.
Advanced
Compare Two Demographic Groups
This tool allows you to compare any two demographic groups side-by-side on separate charts for the same question.
Compare By Demographic Variable
This tool allows you to select one question and one question sub-response and compare across the categories of a demographic type. For example, while in the Explore By Topic > Compare Responses tool, you can select one demographic segment (such as Pet In Household: Yes), and then compare the responses for a given question to each other for that demographic (such as Opinion of social causes, Animal Protection vs. Environmentalism), this tool allows you to do the opposite: select one sub response (such as Opinion of social causes: Animal Protection), and compare across a demographic type, (such as Pet In Household: Yes vs No).
Combined Demographic
This tool allows you to select a single wave using the wave tabs at the top. When you select a wave, the questions dropdown will update to just show questions that were used in that wave, and the chart will update to show the first question in that list. Then, you can select the checkboxes for various demographic segments in order to show combined demographic results. If either none or all of the checkboxes are checked in each group, then that demographic group is ignored. For example, if under "Pet In Household" neither 'No' nor 'Yes' is checked, then this demographic type is ignored and respondents both with and without pets are included in the results.
