This annual poll by Ap-Petside.com asked people about their companion animals, where they obtained them, and how many companions they have, among other questions.
Study Highlights:
- 77% of respondents live with one or more dogs, while 43% live with one or more cats.
- 31% of respondents bought at least one animal from a breeder, while another 30% adopted at least one animal from a shelter.
- Of those respondents who did not currently have any companion animals adopted from a shelter, 32% had, at some time in the past, adopted an animal from a shelter.
- Of those who currently had an animal adopted from a shelter, 58% felt that it being “more socially responsible to adopt a pet from a shelter” was a very important reason for their decision.
- 23% of respondents had brought an animal to a shelter in the past. Of those, about one third brought in their own animal.
