The Incidental Catch of Seabirds in Gillnet Fisheries: A Global Review
Bringing together a wide range of data, both published and unpublished, this paper takes a look at incidental catch (or "bycatch") of seabirds in gillnets, from a global perspective. Though the bycatch of seabirds has been studied around the world regionally, there has been virtually no literature reflecting the global picture. In addition to giving potential estimates of the total amount of seabird bycatch annually, the authors also make suggestions on how those unnecessary deaths can be mitigated. READ MORE

National Whitetail Deer Hunting and Management Survey Results
This survey of whitetail deer hunters from across the U.S., undertaken by Outdoor Life Magazine, aims to give a broad and detailed picture of the condition of the whitetail deer population across the country, which the magazine describes as "at a crossroads." Though there have been numerous environmental factors that have impacted whitetail populations, the survey concentrates on hunters' perceptions to gauge how healthy the deer population is on the ground. Mercury in Fishes from 21 National Parks in the Western United States— Park Variation in Concentrations and Ecological Risk
This report is from the United States Geological Survey and the National Park Service, Air Resources Division. It looks at mercury concentration in fish located in 84 different sites across 21 national parks around the US. The study of "unprecedented spatial breadth" found that mercury levels can vary greatly between different parks, and even within parks themselves, marking the need for more localized monitoring. In some cases, high mercury levels were found in extremely remote areas, indicating that in addition to local monitoring, more research should be carried out into the transport of mercury through the ecosystem. READ MORE

A Comparison of Body Size, Coat Condition and Endoparasite Diversity of Wild Barbary Macaques Exposed to Tourism

Red Wolf (Canis rufus) Recovery: A Review with Suggestions for Future Research
This article presents a comprehensive review and evaluation of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Red Wolf Recovery Program. The paper looks at the human, scientific, and environmentally caused struggles that red wolves have faced, and explains how the combination of different factors has created a particularly challenging climate for red wolves, even as a protected species. Even though the Recovery Program has arguably been successful in protecting red wolves and breeding them for reintroduction, the authors provide this analysis in the hope of improving the success rate of the Recovery Program even further. READ MORE

Estimates of Illegal and Unreported Fish in Seafood Imports to the USA
This study looks at the prevalence and impact of illegal and unreported (IU) fishing on the U.S. market, specifically, "a new effort to study and quantify the dimensions of the problem from the perspective of the United States as a major seafood market." Researchers looked at a wide range of sources to estimate the percentages of IU fish that enter the U.S. market, and also provide a breakdown as to how the IU fishing of different species fits into the overall picture. A Global Gap Analysis of Sea Turtle Protection Coverage
This study takes a global look at sea turtle nesting sites and compares them to maps of protected areas to determine gaps in coverage. Paying special attention to developing countries, or countries in active geopolitical conflict, the study gives a view of sea turtle protection that reaches beyond simply identifying gaps, to better understand why those gaps might exist. The results of the study show that many countries protect only a fraction of their nesting sites, and that more regional and international support is needed to help protect sea turtles in developing countries or those engaged in active conflict. READ MORE

Journey From Wilderness: Facing Dilemmas of Wild Animal Exhibits
In this prose-like journal article, Ken Kawata outlines the common history of zoos and circuses, and describes their relationship to the capture and trade of exotic species from Africa and elsewhere. He explains in detail how the trade and transport of animals for public exhibition has been made logistically easier over the years, and shows the evolution of animal exhibitions from relatively crude caged exhibits to more sophisticated displays attempting a more "natural" appearance. The piece encourages readers not to see zoos and circuses as cultural relics, but rather to understand how their present existence is situated historically. Though he recognizes that zoos and circuses are un-natural settings for animals, his opinion is generally pro-zoo and anti-animal rights, describing anti-zoo activism as "extremist." READ MORE

Evaluating Children’s Conservation Biology Learning at the Zoo
In this study of youth zoo attendees in the UK, researcher Eric Jensen attempts to get to the heart of a key question surrounding the existence of zoos: If a central role of zoos is to promote conservation education among attendees, how well do they accomplish this task? In this particular study, Jensen attempts to address a gap in the literature by focusing on youths, who have rarely been represented in surveys that measure the learning outcomes of zoo attendance. His results show that, while there is a potential for attendance at zoos to result in a positive learning experience, this possibility cannot be taken for granted, and could be the result of numerous factors that are more related to the person guiding the visit and delivering information, rather than the zoo space itself. READ MORE
