In U.S., Concern About Environmental Threats Eases
Concern in the U.S. over environmental issues has been mounting over the last few decades, despite there being considerable political controversy over certain aspects. This broad survey from Gallup finds that, for the first time in many years, Americans have decreased their level of concern overall. The research also finds that, as in previous years, people in the U.S. show more concern over issues of pollution and drinking water, than they do about broader international issues such as global warming or climate change. READ MORE

Animal Reintroductions: An Innovative Assessment of Survival
In an effort to help bolster ecosystems and species struggling to survive, scientists use a variety of tools to help species rebuild. However, success with relocation, repatriation, translocation, and reintroduction programs is still varied. In this study, researchers attempt to show how quantitative measurements of reintroduction can help to evaluate the success or failure of programs aimed at helping species survive and thrive, using tadpoles and toads in the Rocky Mountain National Park as a case study. READ MORE

Pet Virginia Opossums and Skunks
In this information article from the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine, Cathy Johnson-Delaney profiles Virginia opossums and skunks as potential pets, outlining their physical characteristics and personalities, as well as explaining the unique challenges encountered when keeping them as companion animals. Minimal attention is paid to how humans might happen to have acquired such species as companions. The author instead focuses on how to care for opossums and skunks, with the paper geared towards vets who may have to work with these animals. READ MORE

The Incidental Catch of Seabirds in Gillnet Fisheries: A Global Review
Bringing together a wide range of data, both published and unpublished, this paper takes a look at incidental catch (or "bycatch") of seabirds in gillnets, from a global perspective. Though the bycatch of seabirds has been studied around the world regionally, there has been virtually no literature reflecting the global picture. In addition to giving potential estimates of the total amount of seabird bycatch annually, the authors also make suggestions on how those unnecessary deaths can be mitigated. READ MORE

National Whitetail Deer Hunting and Management Survey Results
This survey of whitetail deer hunters from across the U.S., undertaken by Outdoor Life Magazine, aims to give a broad and detailed picture of the condition of the whitetail deer population across the country, which the magazine describes as "at a crossroads." Though there have been numerous environmental factors that have impacted whitetail populations, the survey concentrates on hunters' perceptions to gauge how healthy the deer population is on the ground. The result is a comprehensive survey of hunters' views, not only of deer populations, but also how they are being "managed" by state agencies. READ MORE

Mercury in Fishes from 21 National Parks in the Western United States— Park Variation in Concentrations and Ecological Risk
This report is from the United States Geological Survey and the National Park Service, Air Resources Division. It looks at mercury concentration in fish located in 84 different sites across 21 national parks around the US. The study of "unprecedented spatial breadth" found that mercury levels can vary greatly between different parks, and even within parks themselves, marking the need for more localized monitoring. In some cases, high mercury levels were found in extremely remote areas, indicating that in addition to local monitoring, more research should be carried out into the transport of mercury through the ecosystem. READ MORE
