Mozart In The Kennel: Reducing Dog Stress With Music
Kenneling is known to be stressful for dogs, and researchers are looking at how environmental enrichment might be able to improve the kennel experience to make it more bearable. This paper examines the use of classical music to calm dogs’ nerves, and finds that playing music in a kennel environment can lead to a measurable reduction of stress in dogs. Measuring cortisol levels and heart rate, researchers found that music is especially calming within the first seven days of a kennel stay, after which the effects may begin to wear off. However, more research needs to be done into how music is incorporated into the environment, in order to use it to its full psychological benefit.
