Kentucky Poll On Research Using Animals
Evaluates attitudes about animals used in biomedical research, including differences by species, including monkeys, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, pigs, sheep, rats and mice.
This survey summary showed that 92.7% of respondents indicated awareness that animals are used in some kinds of biomedical research. 6.3% were unaware and 1% did not know. Assuming the research animals are humanely treated, 28.5% are in strong support, 35.8% somewhat support, 14.7% somewhat oppose, 15.8% strongly oppose and 5.3% do not know.
With respect to the use of monkeys in biomedical research, 23.4% strongly support, 36.1% somewhat support, 18.1% somewhat oppose, 16.4% strongly oppose and 6.0% do not know.
With respect to the use of dogs in biomedical research, 19.8% strongly support, 31.5% somewhat support, 18.7% somewhat oppose, 24.4% strongly oppose, and 5.6% do not know.
With respect to the use of cats in biomedical research, 21.9% strongly support, 31.4% somewhat support, 17.9% somewhat oppose, 23.6% strongly oppose and 5.3% don’t know.
With respect to the use of rabbits in biomedical research, 23.3% strongly support, 39.0% somewhat support, 15.3% somewhat oppose, 16.9% strongly oppose, 5.6% don’t know.
With respect to the use of guinea pigs in biomedical research, 26.3% strongly support, 39.0% somewhat support, 13.9% somewhat oppose, 14.3% strongly oppose, 6.6% don’t know.
With respect to he use of rats and mice in biomedical research, 39.7% strongly support, 36.4% somewhat support, 9.6% somewhat oppose, 8.9% strongly oppose, 5.4% don’t’ know.
With respect to the use of pigs in biomedical research, 23.3% strongly support, 34.0% somewhat support, 18.4% somewhat oppose, 17.1% strongly oppose, 7.1% don’t know.
With respect to he use of sheep in biomedical research, 22.3% strongly support, 32.4% somewhat support, 19.0% somewhat oppose, 19.1% strongly oppose, 7.1% don’t know.
“As you may know, Kentucky law requires that dogs and cats that enter pounds must be kept 7 days for the owner to claim or for adoption. At the end of thee 7 days, when they are due to be killed, do you favor or oppose the use of these dogs or cats for biomedical research?”
