Interaction Lacking In Vets And Organic Producers
Both organic farmers and veterinarians were surveyed regarding their interaction and experiences with each other. Overall, there was little interaction between the two groups. Further, there was a disconnect between the groups in that organic farmers rarely sought veterinary help, and veterinarians tended to be unaware of organic production guidelines.
Members of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association and organic producers in the state of Iowa were surveyed. Most organic producers reported little interaction with veterinarians. The reasons cited for this were that they handled the veterinary needs on their own, and that their herds were generally healthy. Veterinarians felt that they had knowledge to offer organic producers about contributing to herd health. However, it was also found that they had little knowledge of organic production guidelines.
