Data published by the California Department of Public Health show that impounds and killing in shelters across the state increased significantly in 2008, with the state of the economy cited as the most likely cause for this increase. At least 153,793 dogs and 257,548 cats were euthanized in California in 2008.
In 2008, a total of 384,405 cats and 402,430 dogs entered shelters in California. There were an estimated 32,737 dog bites and 7,295 cat bites in 2008. There are about 1,782,665 licensed dogs in the state. Note that these figures are based on incomplete data for some counties in California, including Contra Costa, Sacramento, and Tehama counties.
