China’s Swine Industry May Propel U.S. Exports
Planned expansion of the Chinese pig breeding and slaughter industry from 650 million pigs per year to an estimated 730 million pigs per year will require the Chinese to import a substantial amount of feed from the U.S. and other countries.
The Chinese pig industry is quickly changing from backyard farms to large-scale operations similar to those in the United States. The industry is expected to grow from producing about 650 million pigs per year to about 730 million per year.
However, China cannot supply all of the grain required for this expansion and plans to import feed from other countries, including the United States. In particular, farmers will be considering distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS) as a potential source of feed for farmed pigs.
